Private equity firm Windsong Brands LLC has bought the Cloudveil Mountain Works outdoor apparel brand for an undisclosed sum from Spyder Active Sports Inc.

It intends to expand the brand's presence beyond its core categories through licensing deals in complimentary categories.

"In addition, we are excited to begin expanding Cloudveil's core business through new, and existing, premium retail channels," said Windsong's CEO Bill Sweedler.

Jim Reilly, who has served as CEO of Cloudveil and COO of The North Face, and is an investor in the business along with Windsong, will lead the company as president.

"I am confident that we form a great team who has deep industry experience and that we can take Cloudveil to the next level of consumer awareness and brand recognition," Reilly said.

To ensure a smooth transition for Cloudveil's existing dealer base, Spyder will manage the backend support, shipping, and customer service aspects of the spring 2010 season.

Spyder then intends to focus all its resources on Spyder brand growth.

Other investments and brands in the Windsong portfolio brand include Atlantis Weathergear, Ellen Tracy, Caribbean Joe, Joe's Jeans and Field & Stream.
