Shoe maker Wolverine World Wide Inc has reported a 12 per cent rise in third-quarter income, on good sales in three key units.

Third-quarter profit rose to $24.6 million from $21.9m while sales increased to $279.1m from $260.9m.

Wolverine chief executive officer Timothy O'Donovan said: "Three of our major operating groups, the Hush Puppies Company, the Heritage Group and the Outdoor Group all posted double-digit earnings gains, and the Wolverine Footwear Group matched its third quarter 2004 performance."

O'Donovan said the international business also contributed to the growth, recording almost a 17 per cent increase for the quarter.

Chief financial officer Stephen Gulis Jr said the company was increasing marketing support for brands as well as investing into expansion strategies. He said: "The company's investment in new growth initiatives will accelerate in the fourth quarter of 2005 with additional spending of $1.5m".

Wolverine World Wide's brands include Bates, Hush Puppies, HYTEST, Merrell, Sebago and Wolverine.
