Clothing giant Gap Inc has been ordered to pay £136,000 compensation to a shopper hit on the head by a mannequin.

The company was ordered to pay C$330,000 by the Canadian Court of Appeal to former actress Elizabeth Ball who was hit by a four kilogram headless mannequin that fell from a shelf in its Vancouver store six years ago.

The unlucky Ms Ball, who in 1991 was hit by a falling chandelier at a lighting store, sued Gap claiming the knock aggravated a pre-existing neck injury and left her unable to work.

Appeal judges agreed and upheld an earlier ruling despite Gap claiming the 55-year-old's injuries were caused by that earlier accident.
