Fastener manufacturer YKK is to begin production of its eco-friendly Natulon zipper in the US in a bid to cut the environmental impact from sourcing overseas and reduce lead time.

Natulon, which is made from recycled PET bottles, old fibre, and other polyester remnants, is part of YKK (US) Inc's collection of sustainable trims and will be manufactured in Macon, Georgia.

The firm says 10,000 Natulon zippers of 60cm in length recycle about 3,600 plastic bottles. They are also Bluesign certified.

YKK produces the YZiP zipper for jeans and trousers with Natulon material recycled tape for the North and Central America denim industry. It is available for Size 45 with several element finishes, including golden brass, antique gold, antique silver, nickel silver and anti nickel silver.

The Natulon collection also includes environmentally-friendly snaps and buttons using a new finishing process that reduces thermal energy, water usage, and toxic chemicals and waste, the company says.
