Zara's new denim fits are made from repurposed jeans

Fast fashion chain Zara has launched its first collection made from post-consumer denim and revealed plans to scale up its repurposing efforts in the future.

The brand, which is owned by Spanish clothing giant Inditex, is recycling old jeans into upcycled cotton which is, in turn, used to produce new denim.

The collection comprises five styles including boyfriend, high rise, and wide leg jeans. Each of the styles is priced at GBP29.99 (US$36.73) and available in UK sizes 4-18.

Zara says it is continuing to work alongside the non-profit organisation that it collaborates with on its Clothes Collection Programme to create a system that will allow it to continue repurposing denim. "Thanks to this initiative, we can transform waste into new materials, whilst giving a new life to old jeans," the company says.

The news comes a month after parent company Inditex announced a series of new sustainability commitments – including a pledge that 100% of the cotton, linen, and polyester used by all eight of its brands will be organic, sustainable or recycled by 2025.

One of the first milestones is for the number of the group's Join Life garments to more than double in 2019, accounting for over 25% of all garments in 2020. Launched in 2016, the Join Life label identifies the use of more sustainable raw materials such as organic cotton, recycled polyester and Tencel and the prioritisation of more water and energy-friendly processes.

The volume of clothing featuring the Join Life label has already increased by 85% in 2018 to 136m garments. The group is anticipating further growth of 110% in 2019 – and by 2020 one in every four items of clothing put on sale will qualify for this sustainability label.
