The following is a round-up of apparel and footwear news from the world’s local media.

  • South Korean fibre manufacturer Hyosung is planning to invest US$1.2bn in a polypropylene (PP) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) plant project in the southern Ba Ria Vung Tau province of Vietnam. The PP plant will have a capacity of 300m tonnes per year. A second phase will involve the building of a PDH optical fibre plant with an investment of $496m and a second PP plant with an investment of $226m. VIETNAM NET
  • Japanese knitting machine manufacturer Shima Seiki has opened a wholly owned subsidiary in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The company says it is looking to growth in the country’s textile industry, which benefits from “economically advantageous wages and a plentiful workforce”. The decision has also been made in light of the country’s Free Trade Agreement with the EU going into effect in 2018. KNITTING INDUSTRY
  • India’s state pollution control board has sent a closure recommendation for seven garment factories in Gurgaon, for operating in an unauthorised area without all measures in place to counter pollution. The Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) said it had conducted inspections after getting complaints from citizens. The closure recommendation has been sent to the state authorities for approval. TIMES OF INDIA
  • A Chinese investment fund will channel billions of yuan into establishing a textile recycling base in Huanggang City, central China’s Hubei Province. The Yangtze River Economic Belt Industry Fund will provide CYN13.5bn (US$1.9bn) to recycle textile waste and turn it into environmentally friendly material. Currently, only 10% of China’s textile waste is recycled. XINHUA
  • Nahar Industrial Enterprises (NIEL) is to increase fabric production at one of its divisions by one-third following the installation of two new Monforts units. The facility will now be able to increase its fabrics output from 1.5m metres per month to 2.2m metres with the installation of a Monforts Montex stenter and a Thermex continuous dyeing range.   • Turkey has imposed anti-dumping duties on polyester textured yarn items imported from Vietnam,  ranging from 34.81% to 72.56%. Varying rates will be applied to different companies. No date has yet been given on when the duties will take place. VIETNAM PLUS
