Around 22 garment factory employees escaped with minor injuries after the driver of a bus in which they were travelling lost control in Bangalore, India, on 17 September. The bus went over the footpath and hit two parked bikes and came to a halt after running into a small shop which, fortunately, was closed. The injured employees received treatment at hospital. Thai garment exports are expected to continue to decline with more Thai manufacturers expanding to neighbouring countries to tap cheaper costs and better tariff benefits. According to Vallop Vitanakorn, an adviser to the Thai Garment Manufacturers Association, after expanding investments to Cambodia and Vietnam over the past four years, manufacturers were expected to generate US$600m in overseas sales this year. Vallop said that as a result, garment exports from Thailand were forecast to declined around 7% to $2.55bn. THE NATION

Alleged dumping of Chinese textiles into Peru threatens hundreds of thousands of jobs in Gamarra, Lima’s historic garment district. Over 200,000 jobs have been lost and another 400,000 are at risk in the storied garment district located in La Victoria as Peru’s clothing manufacturers struggle to compete with cheap Chinese imports, which they say are being unfairly priced to squeeze out competition. Companies from Hong Kong and South Korea have submitted proposals to establish garment factories and whole industrial zones to the Myanmar Investment Commission (MIC), which is now discussing potential locations with regional governments. The MIC said: “It is still at the discussion stage. They will enter the country when we are ready.
