Department store retailer Macy’s is to expand its e-commerce order fulfillment centre in Tennessee to meet growing demand from online consumers.
The 600,000sq ft facility in Portland will expand by nearly two-thirds, with construction expected to start this autumn and finish within a year.
About 250 full- and part-time jobs will be created by the expansion, adding to the 570 year-round jobs already attached to the centre.
“Our online sales at Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s have grown rapidly in recent years – by a total of 19.6% in 2009, followed by another 31% in the first half of 2010,” said Tom Cole Macy’s chief administrative officer.
“It is important that our systems and support facilities also continue to develop so we can drive growth in the online business and serve customers effectively and efficiently.”
