Mahesh Amalean, the chairman and co-founder of Sri Lankan apparel and fabric manufacturing giant MAS Holdings, has been honoured for his humanitarian work in the apparel sector.

Amalean, who founded the company alongside his brothers Ajay and Sharad, was presented with the Humanitarian Award at The Underfashion Club’s annual Femmy Awards Gala last week.

The Awards recognise individuals and companies that contribute significantly to the growth and creativity of the intimate apparel industry.

“I consider this award bestowed upon me as an appreciation of the humanitarian work carried out to empower the people working with us and to uplift the communities we live in,” Amalean said. “From the inception of our business, our aspiration was to be a world-class organisation, establishing international standards in labour, health and safety and environment, and most importantly, treating people with respect and dignity.”

Founded in 1987, today MAS Holdings manages a portfolio of businesses with a revenue of US$1.8bn. Specialising in intimate apparel, sports, swim and performance wear, the company is the largest apparel and textile manufacturer in South Asia, headquartered in Sri Lanka with 53 manufacturing facilities placed across 16 countries.
