UK supermarket retailer Tesco posted its eighth consecutive quarter of positive sales growth, with its clothing sector performing well throughout the Christmas period as its F&F ranges continue to prove popular with customers.

In its third quarter and Christmas trading statement published today (11 January), Tesco said group like-for-like sales grew by 0.9% in the third quarter and were up by 0.1% in the Christmas period.

The retailer hailed a “strong” third-quarter performance in the UK and Republic of Ireland, with UK like-for-like sales up 2.3% in the period and 1.9% over the Christmas trading season. In the ROI, third-quarter and Christmas sales climbed 3.3% and 4% respectively.

Meanwhile, clothing sales grew by 5% in the Christmas period, as the company’s F&F ranges continued to prove popular with customers.

“We have continued to outperform the market throughout this period, particularly in fresh food, thanks to our most competitive offer for many years,” said CEO Dave Lewis. “Our trading momentum accelerated across the third quarter and into December, with the four weeks leading up to Christmas Day delivering record sales and volumes in the UK.”

Molly Johnson-Jones, senior retail analyst at GlobalData, notes clothing sales were stronger than Sainsbury’s during the period, as the review and revamping of F&F ranges resonated with consumers.
