Israel based nylon 6.6 manufacturer Nilit has published a new sustainability strategy following a life cycle assessment (LCA) across its products and manufacturing facilities.

Among its objectives, the company outlined reducing its carbon footprint, greenhouse gas emissions, consumption of water and other natural resources, and use of harmful chemicals and nonrenewable materials as a priority, along with the creation of new products that are bio-based, biodegradable and recycled.

It also says its aim is to adhere to “the highest standard” in regard to ethical business practices while treating employees, customers, suppliers, and partners with courtesy and respect and choosing to partner with those who do the same.

Nilit plans to implement the strategy at its global locations and work closely with supply chain partners to identify opportunities to enhance the sustainability of their products and procedures.

Some of the initiatives it says it has implemented as a result of its LCA include:

  • Moving to natural gas as the main source of energy at its largest manufacturing site.
  • Implementing BAT (Best Available Techniques) processes for the reduction of emissions.
  • Recycling waste products including emulsions, oils, electrical supplies, manufactured products and solvents.
  • Installing state-of-the-art water treatment systems.
  • Implementing policies to procure raw material from responsible vendors.
  • Optimising shipping and logistics to reduce the environmental impact of freight transport.

Nilit, which specialises in nylon 6.6 fashion and performance fibres, is also in the process of launching sustainable products that use recycled material, biomass feedstock, and decomposable ingredients, as well as less energy, water and chemicals in manufacturing and downstream processing. Its lineup already includes Ecocare recycled yarn.
