Apparel factory managers met with solar companies and regional garment associations in Myanmar last week to discuss the potential for renewable energy in the sector.

The event was arranged by the Myanmar Garment Manufacturers Association (MGMA), the EU-funded SMART Myanmar project, and Swedish retailer H&M Group, in association with German development agency Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

With the garment and textile sector estimated to produce about 10% of global carbon emissions, the event aimed to explore how switching to more renewable energies in the supply chain could not only contribute to a reduction in CO2 emissions but also increase competitiveness and market access.

Along with sharing best practice throughout the region, 160 participants from factories, regional producer associations, solar companies, and development partners discussed success factors and challenges in the move towards greater sustainability in the supply chain.

Technological solutions and funding options were also discussed.
