US apparel retailer Everlane has pledged to move all of its cotton to certified organic by 2023.
The brand made the claim on its website, explaining to users how conventional cotton is “harming the planet”.
“Worldwide, cotton farming uses more toxic pesticides per acre than any other crop. Those chemicals are stripping the land of nutrients, contaminating our water, and endangering the people who grow the cotton,” it said.
Everlane added organic is better in three ways: healthier soil due to the lack of toxic pesticides; clean water – again free of pesticides; and safer for workers because it replaces dangerous chemicals with natural alternatives and old-school agriculture techniques.
Everlane’s organic cotton is grown and milled in Madhya Pradesh, India, and is certified organic by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).
The launch starts with an organic cotton T-shirt which will be rolled out on 24 March.

Everlane has made a number of decisions to help clean up its supply chain. In 2018, it vowed to cut the use of all virgin plastic from its supply chain by 2021, with a new campaign called Renew that will see it phase out its use of plastic by swapping it for recycled alternatives.
