Italian news agency Agenzia Nazionale Stampa Associata (ANSA) said sources have confirmed a Reuters report, where Tod’s was accused of “facilitating” the exploitation for failing to control the conduct of subcontractors.

The request said police inspections “photographed a phenomenon where two worlds, only apparently distant, luxury on one side and Chinese workshops on the other, come together for a single objective: reducing costs and maximising profits by evading criminal and labour laws”.

Tod’s did not return request for comment when approached by Just Style.

Earlier this year, Italy’s industry minister was reportedly weighing the introduction of a certification scheme after LVMH’s Loro Piana brand was placed under court administration over alleged worker exploitation.

The administration aimed to address the shortfalls in Loro Piana’s supply chain. It marked the fifth luxury brand to undergo such court monitoring in Italy since early 2024.

Adolfo Urso, Italy’s industry minister, told fashion trade bodies during a meeting that a few unlawful businesses in the fashion supply chain have tainted the image of ‘Made in Italy’, according to sources cited by Reuters.
