Four years after it started labelling some of its products with details of their environmental impact, footwear and clothing maker The Timberland Company is to roll out the Green Index rating scheme across its entire footwear line.

The company first introduced the label back in 2006, and currently tags 14% of its footwear with the rating. Under the new plans, all of its shoes will carry details on the climate impact, chemicals and materials used in their production by the end of 2012.

Timberland’s efforts to improve product transparency and labelling include making footwear boxes from 100% recycled fibres using no chemical glues and soy-based inks for label printing.

Its labelling is also designed to help consumers understand more about where their product was manufactured, how it was produced and its impact on the environment.

The Green Index score reports on product-specific ratings for select environmental factors, giving each product a mark out of ten for each.

It includes scores on climate impact (measuring greenhouse gas emissions produced from raw materials through manufacturing) and the chemicals used (solvent adhesives and polyvinyl chloride (PVC)) in the production of products. It also measures the use of organic, recycled or renewable materials.
