The US has met with officials in Egypt to provide an update on President Donald Trump’s administration priorities on trade, including those related to apparel – a dominant import for the US from the country.

At the meeting in Cairo on Tuesday (5 December), the officials discussed ways to further expand fair and reciprocal trade and investment between the two countries.

Last year, the US had a US$2bn goods trade surplus with Egypt. US good exports totalled $3.5bn, with top categories including machinery, mineral fuels, vehicles, aircraft, and electrical machinery. US goods imports from Egypt totalled $1.5bn, with top categories including woven apparel, knit apparel, mineral fuels, carpets and other textile coverings, and art and antiques.

The meeting was used by the US to underscore the importance the Administration places on deepening trade ties with countries in the Europe and Middle East region, including Egypt, according to the Office of the US Trade Representative.

Both US and Egyptian officials agreed to work together to address outstanding bilateral trade issues, including those related to market access, standards, labour, and intellectual property protection. They also agreed to devise new ways to promote trade between the two nations.
