One of India’s leading textile research institutes is to intensify its research and development into the textile and apparel industry in a bid to try to overcome challenges facing the sector and capitalise on rising costs in China.
The commitment has been made by the Ghaziabad-based Northern India Textile Research Association (NITRA) on the re-election of its chairman, Sanjay Kumar Jain, at its recent 41st annual general meeting.

The Association is one of the prime textile research institutes in the country and was established by the Ministry of Textiles in 1974 to conduct research and provide support services to India’s textile industry. Its prime activities include R&D, technical consultancy, quality evaluation of materials, and manpower training.
As such, NITRA says it will intensify its core activity in order to provide a better support service to the sector.
Jain told attendees of the AGM that the industry is going through “unprecedented challenges,” such as an increase in India’s cotton prices, which have “pushed the industry to the brink.”
However, he said there is a “great opportunity in front of the textile industry to capture the space being vacated by the Chinese industry due to their spiralling costs.”

By GlobalDataAs well as the “immense potential” for conducting needs-based R&D, Jain said NITRA will also prioritise services such as technical training, training and testing.
Addressing the gathering, Jain praised the training offered by NITRA and advised the young students to be “hardworking and quick learners” given the inadequate availability of skilled manpower in India’s textile industry. The training programmes offered by NITRA cover areas such as garment manufacturing, designing, merchandising and quality assurance.
