Outdoor apparel, equipment and footwear brand The North Face has reduced the environmental footprint of one of its iconic products – the ThermoBall Eco jacket – by using recycled materials.
One of the the company’s largest product lines, the new ThermoBall Eco uses recycled insulation sourced from Primaloft, which is spun from at least five plastic bottles that are diverted from landfill. The price of the jacket will remain the same, the company says.
“We know that material production and manufacturing accounts for 60-85% of our total environmental impact,” the brand says.
“This motivated us to change the materials used in our largest collections to recycled materials. In this case, we’re taking plastic bottles and recycling them into fibres and fabrics. Converting ThermoBall to recycled materials is an important step toward creating sustainable change at scale.”
The company continues: “This evolution builds upon how we’ve shifted to use recycled fibres across our core products like our iconic Denali jackets back in 1996, our Reaxion and Glacier lines, and with the launch of our Bottle Source collection in early 2018, sourced from plastic bottles from national parks.
“When we launched ThermoBall in 2013, it made waves for its groundbreaking use of synthetic insulation. The small round synthetic fibre clusters, which trap heat within small air pockets mimicking down, can offer the lightweight warmth and compressibility of down jackets with the wet-weather performance of synthetic insulation. Independent testing by Kansas State University has shown that ThermoBall has warmth equivalent to 600 fill goose down.”
