Teijin Frontier, the fibre product converting business of Teijin Group, has developed a highly modified cross-section crimped yarn it says is suitable for use in sports apparel.

The company describes its new Solotex Octa yarm as “extra bulky, lightweight, stretchable and shape-recovering.” While the staple-fibre version can be used to replace feathers in bedding, the filament version has applications in textiles for sportswear and fashionwear.

Solotex Octa answers demand for a bulky, lightweight and stretchable synthetic filament, Teijin Frontier says, adding that until now, manufacturers have found it difficult to produce a fibre that is both bulky and stretchable. It also meets a need for synthetic staple fibre insulation that is extra shape-recovering after compression, and can be used as a substitute for natural feathers.

The firm developed the new yarn by transforming the cross-sectional shape of Solotex (a stretchable, shape-recovering, and high-cushioning material), into a highly modified cross-section, comprising eight projections aligned in a radial pattern around a hollow fibre.

In comparison to the original Solotex, fabrics made with Solotex Octa are absorbent, quick drying, anti-transparent, and provide thermal barriers and insulation due to their large surface area, the company says.

Teijin Frontier expects annual sales of the staple fibre to reach 400 tonnes and sales of filament Solotex Octa to reach 1m metres as textiles by the fiscal year ending in March 2023.
