The central Asian country of Tajikistan has seen its production of textiles and clothing increase almost 30% in the first eight months of the year, new figures show, with exports also on the rise.

According to the country’s Ministry of Energy and Industry, the production of textile and clothing products during the period amounted to more than TJS844.5m (US$89.6m). The sector’s industrial production index increased by 29.1% due to an increase in the output of cotton fibre, fabric, carpets and carpet products, and hosiery.

For the eight-month period from January to August, textile exports in particular amounted to more than US$149.6m, a jump of 92% on the prior year, according to statistics agency Avesta. Of this total, over $106.9m accounted for the export of cotton fibre.

Tajikistan has also seen an increase in the production of leather, and leather goods, in particular footwear. Production of leather and leather products increased by 25.7% year-on-year thanks to a 9.5% increase in leather production, and a 19.9% increase in footwear production.

The total amount of leather goods produced during the eight month period amounted to around US$5.1m. However, the country imported more than $5.7m worth of footwear, but exported only $26,000 worth.
