Amazon looks like it could be ramping up its assault on the fashion industry on both sides of the Atlantic, after the US online behemoth filed a series of trademarks for more clothing brands.

Filed last month, the e-commerce giant has submitted US trademark applications for eight apparel lines, including childrenswear, outwear, and casual wear under the names League of Outstanding Kids, Common District, Outerwear Index Co, Zanie Kids, Afterthought, Due East Apparel, Truity, and Night Swim.

Amazon has made no secret of its desire to dominate in the apparel space and over the last few years has been building up its private-label clothing lines, as well as taking on a raft of brands such as Nike, Under Armour, Hanes, and Gildan Activewear.

It also launched Prime Wardrobe last year – a try before you buy and only pay for what you keep, service – and the Echo Look personal shopping app.

The retailer may be looking to fend off competition from the likes of Walmart and Target Corp who are also making large investments in clothing. Earlier this year, Walmart launched a number of low-cost apparel brands.
