In a move designed to help boost its understanding of the impacts involved in its supply chain, Turkey-based denim manufacturing giant Isko has worked to obtain Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) of all 25,000-plus of its denim products.

An LCA is a globally recognised methodology used to assess and quantify the environmental footprint of a product, considering impacts across the entire product lifecycle from raw material to finished product.

“By understanding the environmental footprint of any product, we are able to identify any areas where improvements can be made, and allow our customers to make fully informed decisions,” says the firm.

In order to ensure the validity and replicability of the LCAs – which, in Isko’s case are in line with ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 – publicly available and independently verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) have been produced by the company, in line with ISO 14025.

An EPD is a document used to communicate verified, transparent, and comparable information about the life-cycle of products.

The move sees Isko become the first denim manufacturer globally to obtain pre-certified EPDs for all of its products, grouped into nine categories.

Meanwhile, the results of these industry-first EPDs will be used to create the independently devised Product Category Rules (PCR) for future denim industry EPDs.

Due to be published in November, the PCR will pave the way for consistent and comparable assessments of denim across the industry, says Isko, increasing transparency of environmental impact, improving consumer awareness and driving environmental improvement.

Earlier this year, Isko was awarded EU Ecolabel certification for its Earth Fit eco-friendly denim platform.
