Tchibo said the raw materials of a PET bottle can be properly used and recycled in the fashion industry, for example in sports outfits and bathing shoes. Swimsuits and sports tops can be made from old fishing nets.

“Fashion made of recycled plastic is, therefore, a contribution to meaningfully using plastic waste and keeping the raw material in circulation,” said the company.

Tchibo’ second collection of sportswear made using recycled plastics and polyester fibres will be available from 4 June.

Its efforts, it adds, have seen it reuse more than 4.4m PET bottles and 80 tonnes of recycled polyester fibres as well as saving the equivalent of around 220 tonnes of CO2 through its reuse of polyester fibres.
