India’s exports of readymade garments rose 7.17% during February 2019 compared with the same month a year earlier, according to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, making it one of five major commodity export groups to show positive growth year-on-year.

Exports of cotton yarn, fabrics, made-ups and handloom products also grew 2.25% against the same period last year. Overall exports from India rose 2.44% to $26.67bn year-on-year.

Local press, citing commerce and industry minister Suresh Prabhu, said the country’s total goods exports will reach $330bn in 2018-19. From April-January, exports from India were 9.5% higher at $271.8bn.

Prabhu also said the Department of Commerce has identified nine sectors including leather and textiles that are expected to achieve at least 16% export growth in 2018-19.

According to recent data from the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCIS), the European Union, the United States and the United Arab Emirates remained the top export destinations for India’s textile and apparel products with a combined share of 54% during the first nine months of fiscal 2019.
