Notably, Production Occupations jobs accounted for a 19% share of the global apparel industry’s environmental sustainability-related total new job postings in Q1 2023, down 31% over the prior quarter.

Production Occupations drive environmental sustainability-related hiring activity

Production Occupations, with a share of 19%, emerged as the top environmental sustainability-related job roles within the apparel industry in Q1 2023, with new job postings drop by 31% quarter-on-quarter. Management Occupations came in second with a share of 15% in Q1 2023, with new job postings rising by 11% over the previous quarter.

The other prominent environmental sustainability roles include Installation, Maintenance, and Repair Occupations with an 11% share in Q1 2023, Architecture and Engineering Occupations with a 8% share of new job postings.

Top five companies in apparel industry accounted for 61% of hiring activity

The top companies, in terms of number of new job postings tracked by GlobalData, as of Q1 2023 were Walmart, Amazon, Walt Disney, BPS Direct, and Avery Dennison. Together they accounted for a combined share of 61% of all environmental sustainability-related new jobs in the apparel industry.

Walmart posted 1,171 environmental sustainability-related new jobs in Q1 2023, Amazon 387 jobs, Walt Disney 273 jobs, BPS Direct 93 jobs, and Avery Dennison 83 jobs, according to GlobalData’s Job Analytics.

Hiring activity was driven by the US with a 67.31% share of total new job postings, Q1 2023

The largest share of environmental sustainability-related new job postings in the apparel industry in Q1 2023 was in the US with 67.31% followed by the UK (8.02%) and France (6.16%). The share represented by the US was five percentage points lower than the 71.93% share it accounted for in Q4 2022.
