Industrial filtration technology: Advancing microfiber capture at scale

Regen.® for Textile Production

Matter and Paradise Textiles were recognised for the development of Regen.® – the world’s first microfiber filtration system specifically designed for textile manufacturing.

This breakthrough addresses a critical industry gap: while microfibers pollution from synthetic textiles is a well-documented environmental issue, few effective solutions have existed for capturing fibers during production.

A key differentiator of Regen.® is its use of Matter’s patented self-cleaning filtration technology. Unlike conventional filters that require frequent manual cleaning or replacement, Regen.® operates continuously with minimal intervention – reducing downtime, maintenance costs, and energy use. Built to perform in high-volume manufacturing, the system supports both operational efficiency and a reduced carbon footprint, making it a practical solution for global adoption.

Designed for real-world scalability

One of the most significant aspects of the innovation is its retrofittable design. Textile manufacturing is a global industry with a vast number of legacy facilities – many of which lack advanced wastewater treatment infrastructure. Regen.® can be integrated into existing production lines without the need for major capital investment or operational disruption. This feature is crucial for enabling rapid, widespread adoption across the industry, regardless of a factory’s location or current technological maturity.

A model for tech-manufacturer collaboration

The partnership between Matter and Paradise Textiles stands out for its deeply collaborative and solution-driven model.

As the material science and innovation hub of Alpine Group, an end-to-end fashion supply chain partner producing materials and apparel for global brands including The North Face, Under Armour, and Abercrombie & Fitch – Paradise Textiles, proactively approached Matter, recognising the potential of its breakthrough filtration technology for addressing microfiber pollution in textile manufacturing. Drawing on its deep expertise in textile production and fiber pollution mitigation, Paradise collaborated closely with Matter over a multi-year R&D programme, contributing technical insights into production workflows, funding early-stage development, and helping to adapt and scale the solution for real-world industrial use.

The partnership also saw Matter and Paradise Textiles co-create the Microfiber Assessment Program (MAP) – an industry-first initiative that offers a standardised framework for measuring and optimising fiber capture in real-world manufacturing environments. The programme enables manufacturers to quantify the effectiveness of microfiber filtration, benchmark performance across sites, and identify areas for continuous improvement. Paradise played a key role in adapting MAP into a service model designed to maximise fiber capture across Alpine Group’s 15+ global facilities.

This data-driven approach supports compliance with emerging regulatory requirements and aligns with growing demands from brands and consumers for greater transparency in environmental performance. This level of accountability is essential for building trust and demonstrating measurable progress toward environmental goals.

This cross-sector alliance demonstrates the power of co-creation between tech innovators and established manufacturers – delivering a solution that is not only scientifically advanced, but also scalable, practical, and ready for industry-wide adoption. The project’s industry relevance and impact potential are reinforced by its backing from Regeneration.VC – a climate tech fund supported by Leonardo DiCaprio – and its unveiling at New York Climate Week 2024. The first Regen.® installation, set to launch at Paradise Textiles’ new low-impact mill in Egypt in the coming months, will serve as a flagship site, demonstrating the technology’s scalability and real-world effectiveness for global brands and manufacturers.

Adam Root, Matter

“Regen. ® for Textile Production proves it’s possible to deliver solutions that create both commercial value and positive environmental impact. In partnership with Paradise Textiles, we’ve developed filtration that helps factories achieve their sustainability goals while improving operational efficiency. We’re proud that it’s attracting recognition for both innovation and environmental impact – hopefully inspiring wider adoption and accelerating change to meet the critical challenge of microplastics and microfiber pollution.”

Microfiber pollution mitigation: Delivering measurable environmental impact

The Just Style Environmental Award for Microfiber Pollution Mitigation recognizes Regen.® for Textile Production’s direct and scalable approach to addressing one of the textile industry’s most significant environmental challenges: the release of microfibers into water systems. Microfibers, which are microscopic threads shed from synthetic fabrics during manufacturing, dyeing, and washing, are a major source of microplastic pollution. These particles are now found in oceans, rivers, and even within the human body, with research linking them to adverse health and ecological effects.

Regen.® captures microfibers directly at the source – during manufacturing, before they can enter wastewater streams. This proactive solution is vital, as the global textile industry releases an estimated 160,000 tonnes of microfibers each year.

The environmental benefits of Regen.® are both measurable and compelling. A single installation can capture up to 170 tonnes of microfibers and save 500 tonnes of CO₂ over just three years.

Beyond this, the system can cut energy consumption by up to 3 million kilowatt-hours annually per site and reduce reliance on chemicals in water treatment. These improvements extend the lifespan of water reuse systems and drive down operating costs, offering a strong environmental and economic case for widespread adoption.

The solution is designed to be practical and scalable for use in diverse manufacturing contexts, including regions with limited infrastructure for advanced wastewater treatment. By providing a model that can be replicated across the global industry, Regen.® offers a pathway for textile manufacturers to address a major source of microplastic pollution and align with evolving environmental standards.

The collaboration between Paradise Textiles and Matter Industries showcases how focused innovation, guided by industry expertise and backed by measurable data, can drive real environmental progress. By capturing microfibers at the source, the solution fills a critical gap in production-stage environmental management and accelerates the shift toward more sustainable textile manufacturing.

Lewis Shuler, Paradise Textiles

“Regen.® reflects what’s possible when purpose-led innovation meets hands-on industry expertise. We’re honored to receive these awards, and excited to launch Regen.® at Paradise Textiles’ new mill in Egypt. In partnership with Matter, we’re scaling a solution focused on capturing fibers at the source, a critical step in a multi-pronged approach to reducing fiber pollution from textiles.”
