The European footwear industry experienced variable fortunes last year with some countries seeing production and sales increases while others continued to decline. Looking ahead to 2001, the spectres of low cost imports, globalisation and price hikes brought on by the foot-and-mouth crisis loom ominously. Is there any room for optimism this year? By Jane Mallin.
