Following a comprehensive test study, German sportswear giant Adidas is rolling out built-in odour protection technology across its Terrex CC Voyager footwear.
The company has selected the Polygiene Stays Fresh Technology from Sweden’s Polygiene AB to treat the shoes that go on sale tomorrow (1 February).
Polygiene stops the growth of odour-causing bacteria on fabrics with treatments based on silver salt (silver chloride) made from recycled silver, that can be applied at the fabric stage or the finished garment stage.
The firm hails its partnership with Adidas as part of its strategic effort within the footwear segment and its financial goal of net sales of more than EUR40m (US$5.1m) and an EBIT margin exceeding 20% by 2022.
“Our strategic plan includes a breakthrough in the footwear segment and Polygiene launching with Adidas Terrex is an important step in the right direction,” says Polygiene CEO Ulrika Björk. “My hope is that this leads to more and larger cooperations with Adidas, whilst also opening the door to more brands in the footwear industry. I am convinced that what we see today is just the beginning of a very exciting journey for Polygiene going forward.”
An external market report commissioned by Polygiene in 2017 indicates that the global addressable odour control market for all types of footwear amounts to about 450m pairs of shoes per year long-term. Polygiene’s ambition is to become the market leader in this segment.
