Online retail giant Amazon has become the last firm to pledge a commitment to stop sourcing the raw material for its viscose and rayon textiles from ancient and endangered forests.

The internet behemoth has joined the CanopyStyle initiative from environmental not-for-profit Canopy. The partnership comes amid a timelined commitment to ensure that by 2022, none of the manmade cellulosic fibres—including rayon/viscose, lyocell, and modal—sourced for Amazon-owned private brand apparel products are derived from ancient and endangered forests, or from endangered species’ habitats or other controversial sources, as defined by the nonprofit organization Canopy’s tools and reports.

The pledge covers more than 60 brands, with products ranging from shorts to dresses to T-shirts, according to a blog post published by Canopy.

With their addition, the CanopyStyle initiative now has more than 320 participating brands, retailers, and designers representing US$578bn in annual revenue. All are committed to eliminating ancient and endangered forests fibre from their fabrics, to developing alternative, next-generation sourcing solutions, and helping advance large-scale conservation of landscapes such as Indonesia’s Leuser Ecosystem and Canada’s Boreal Forests.

Teams at Amazon EU and Amazon US will be using the CanopyStyle Hot Button Report to inform their procurement decisions.

The retailer announced its CanopyStyle commitment as part of a suite of sustainability initiatives including packaging, leather, and clothing.

Canopy says while its work with Amazon is currently focused on viscose fabrics, it looks forward to expanding the partnership to address raw material sourcing and broader next generation solutions for Amazon’s packaging and ensuring they are in-line with scientific imperatives for forest protection.
