The ATTI initiative, jointly led by the International Apparel Federation (IAF) and the International Textile Manufacturers Federation (ITMF), was unveiled during a panel discussion in London as part of the city’s Climate Action Week.

ATTI’s mission is to catalyse substantial ecological improvements throughout international supply chains by empowering manufacturers to lead the change.

“The launch of ATTI marks a new era in our efforts to transform the industry. Manufacturers are not just participants—they are leaders in developing the practical solutions our sector urgently needs,” IAF secretary general Matthijs Crietee said.

The ATTI has established a structured framework for domestic execution, complemented by global governance.

This involves setting up ATTI Country Chapters where national industry associations spearhead the creation of Apparel and Textile Transformation Plans that are customised to their local environments.

Oversight is provided by the ATTI Global Council, which offers strategic direction and assistance to these Country Chapters, encourages shared learning among peers, and ensures consistency across different regions.

Actions under this initiative are globally coordinated but locally rooted, involving collaboration across all tiers of production.

Manufacturers, brands, financial institutions, policymakers, and civil society organisations come together to jointly develop practical solutions tailored to each country’s needs. These solutions aim to be scalable and in line with international sustainability objectives.

“This initiative supports real transformation at the national level across all tiers, while ensuring lessons and innovations are shared globally,” stated Christian Schindler, director general of ITMF.

ATTI covers sustainability challenges such as emissions, water use and discharge, chemicals, and waste management. Its nationally focused framework means the most pressing challenges in each country can be addressed individually, enabling more impactful and quantifiable advancements.

The initiative aims to supplement existing sustainability programmes by adopting a comprehensive, needs-driven methodology encompassing three phases.

Phase I involves conducting an extensive needs assessment to pinpoint activities, accomplishments, areas lacking attention, and obstacles within each country.

Phase II engages relevant industry participants in a collaborative solutions design phase.

Phase III encompasses a structured implementation process that may trigger targeted investments, improve technical assistance, deploy clean technologies, or facilitate policy frameworks based on the Solutions Design outcomes.

Bangladesh and Türkiye have started testing Country Chapters with ongoing national needs assessments led by local industry bodies and incorporating contributions from brands operating in these regions, current industry initiatives, regional expertise, and government officials.

As part of the first phase in Türkiye, local manufacturers, global brands, and government parties met recently to discuss initial needs assessment results and identify priority action areas such as technology upgrades, financial access, and regulatory engagement.

Olivia Windham Stewart, an advisor of the initiative, said: “Manufacturers are expert innovators and bring first-hand knowledge of their own operating environments to deliver this transformation. They also understand the importance of designing solutions that reflect their local context. We’re already attracting strong support from leading industry stakeholders who recognise the vital role that manufacturers and national associations play in shaping the future of the sector. We welcome all stakeholders committed to accelerating industry transformation to join us.”
