The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) are establishing a temporary warehouse in response to the disruption, according to local news publication The Business Standard, which cites a press release from the two organisations.

BGMEA and BKMEA had not responded to Just Style’s request for comment at the time of going to press, but the facility, dubbed “Rubb Hall,” is expected to be set up at the newly constructed Terminal 3 of the airport, which has not yet commenced full operations.

It is intended for the secure storage of imported raw materials and other goods.

The fire, which took place at the import cargo complex of Dhaka airport on Saturday (18 October) was of grave concern to garment exporters with an industry expert telling Just Style at the time that urgent air shipments had been destroyed and product samples had “burned into ashes”.

The move by BGMEA and BKMEA comes as part of broader efforts to mitigate losses after the fire destroyed crucial infrastructure for import logistics.

BGMEA has reportedly placed an order with a supplier to install the Rubb Hall, with implementation anticipated in the near future.

On 20 October, representatives from BGMEA and BKMEA, including their respective presidents Mahmud Hasan Khan and Mohammad Hatem, met with Sheikh Bashiruddin, Adviser to the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism. Senior leaders from both organisations participated in the meeting.

All parties agreed to set up a temporary warehouse to safeguard imported goods and enable uninterrupted import operations for the garment sector.

In a separate incident that took place earlier this month (October), a fire broke out at a four-storey garment factory in Dhaka’s Mirpur area resulting in at least 16 fatalities.

The International Accord on Factory Safety told Just Style at the time that the event was “a stark reminder of the devastating human cost of inadequate safety measures.”

On 7 October, BGMEA announced the development of an AI-enabled Digital Factory Passport. This initiative is designed to improve data management and reporting across Bangladesh’s readymade garment industry.

According to BGMEA data, exports from Bangladesh’s readymade garment sector reached $39.35bn in the fiscal year 2024-25, making up 81.49% of the country’s total exports.
