The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has confirmed it recently sought BDT55m (US$651,324) from the World Trade Organisation to enable it to invest in research and development, innovation, product diversification and value addition, with the aim of making the readymade garments (RMG) sector more sustainable.
In an email to just-style, a spokesperson or the BGMEA confirmed local press reports that BGMEA’s president Rubana Huq made the plea to commerce minister Tipu Munshi for the amount to be derived from the fund provided by the WTO to locations with a least developed country status.
Munshi said the department of commerce is weighing up the demand which will see BDT20m assigned to R&D for the future sustainability of the RMG sector, BDT7.5m for establishment of a productivity centre, BDT7.5m for development of harmonised and unified planning tools for the sector and BDT20m for product innovation and moving up to the value-added segment.
Last week, the BGMEA proposed setting up a joint commission to address day-to-day customs and bond-related issues and simplify annual audit procedures.
