Hundreds of Bangladeshi clothing workers demonstrated in the country’s capital Dhaka at the weekend protesting against their alleged dismissal by Haesong Corporation Limited, a Korean-owned ready-made garment factory.
Supported by the National Garment Workers Federation (NGWF), the workers gathered outside the Labour Ministry, demanding revocation and a re-opening of the factory, located in the Gazipur district of Dhaka, following what they say was an unauthorised layoff.

The Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh severed ties with Haesong Group (Haesong Corporation Ltd and Haesong Sweater Ltd) at the end of last year after it failed to implement workplace safety measures. The NGWF says the Korean owner on 25 November laid-off around 1,800 workers for one and a half months. They are now demanding to be paid their “lawful dues and compensation.”
There are also claims the factory has terminated the jobs of around 6,200 of its 8,000 workers in the last year without paying compensation.
In August, there was a call for the arrest of the factory owner after workers taking part in a peaceful protest over unpaid wages were attacked. The NGWF says 16 workers were seriously injured as a result.
A written complaint has since been submitted to the Ministry of Home Affairs, and Ministry of Commerce by the BGMEA (Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers & Exporters Association).
