Remora’s partnership with BST will see its solutions being applied to various textiles including performance wear, outdoor clothing, and technical materials.

Biofilms, which consist of microscopic organisms that cling to fabrics, present a prevalent challenge within the textile industry. They are particularly problematic for performance apparel, leading to enduring odours, discoloration, and deterioration of materials despite frequent laundering. They can also cause skin irritation and contamination.

Remora’s proprietary technology has been developed from a molecule that mimics the natural defence systems found in red seaweed. The technology targets the root of biofilm formation without depending on harmful antimicrobial substances.

Remora chief commercial officer Dr Yvonne Davies said: “Our Remora technology offers a sustainable, scientifically proven alternative to toxic biocidal treatments and will help brands tackle persistent odour, staining and material degradation caused by biofilms.

“Through BST’s extensive global supply chain relationships and deep expertise in green chemistry, we now have a clear route to market with some of the biggest names in fashion, performance wear and technical textiles. This collaboration doesn’t just scale our technology, it unlocks its full potential to support a cleaner, safer and more sustainable future for textiles.”

The alliance with BST aims to foster the production of textiles that are cleaner and more durable.

Beyond Surface Technologies co-founder and CEO Matthias Foessel said it “signed this collaboration with Remora, based on a Unilever patent portfolio”.

“This partnership marks another important milestone in our mission to advance chemistry with reduced environmental impact – without compromising on performance,” Foessel added.

Remora developed the technology through a research and development initiative spanning over ten years between Unilever and prominent UK universities.

The technology is poised to enter into the commercial textile sector through BST’s expertise in formulations and an extensive network of customers that includes leading global fashion and sportswear brands.

Remora chief executive Dr Richard Hammond said: “Biofilms are a global issue, responsible for over 80% of bacterial infections and costing the economy more than $4tn annually. In textiles, they compromise hygiene, comfort and product quality. Remora provides a clean, science-based solution to this challenge. Through our partnership with BST, we can now bring it to manufacturers and brands around the world.”
