A Chinese investment firm is constructing what is being hailed as Egypt’s “biggest city for textile and clothes manufacturing.”

Amr Nassar, Minister of Trade and Industry for Egypt, said the facility will be based in Egypt’s Sadat City, north of the capital Cairo.

Ningxia Mankai Investment Co is the company behind the textile park, which will extend over an area of 3.1 million square metres and house 592 factories.

“The new textile city is one of the mega projects being launched in Egypt, using state-of-the-art technologies in the business,” Nassar said.

He also pointed out that 50% of the construction works of the 600,000 square metre first phase have been completed, with a total cost of EGP2.1bn (US$118.8m), noting that it will include 150 plants.

Pilot operation of some of the first phase factories will start in May, with full operation planned by the end of the year.

On its website, Mankai said the future annual output of the project would be US$9bn.   

Earlier this month just-style reported that Chinese clothing firms were targeting Egypt to avoid tariffs imposed by the US.
