The initiative between Crystal and HKPC was funded by the Innovation and Technology Commission and seeks to enhance thermal clothing through the application of reduced graphene oxide (r-GO).

Integrated with power devices and voltage sources, r-GO serves as an electrothermal material that enhances the functionality of thermal wear.

Crystal’s collaboration uses HKPC’s solutions to refine the r-GO composite coating, adjusting electrical conductivity to maximise heat generation.

A precision smart-screen-printing system incorporates this additive into clothing, enhancing electrothermal performance while reducing manufacturing expenses.

Launched in 2021, the project has undergone two major development and execution stages.

In the initial phase, Crystal’s knits division joined as an industry co-applicant, providing funding and technical support for research and developing multifunctional fabrics with a graphene coating for smart wearable applications, in partnership with HKPC and The Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel (HKRITA).

Following development completion, Crystal secured a utility model patent in China under HKPC’s technology authorisation.

In 2023, the project entered its second phase under the Public Sector Trial Scheme led by HKPC, concentrating on applying the technology to complete garment production.

This stage involved creating prototypes and testing electrothermal clothing samples in real-world settings such as Tung Wah Group of Hospitals’ Wong Cho Tong Day Care Centre for the Elderly.

The thermal wear cleared laboratory evaluations on durability against rubbing and washing, electrical safety, and skin irritation tests, stated Crystal.

During field trials involving 100 elderly participants, feedback surveys collected data on warmth perception, heating evenness, user-friendliness, and longevity.

The garments demonstrated a swift heating rate of 30°C within two minutes for rapid user comfort enhancement. Participants reported satisfaction levels with an average score of 8.3 out of 9.

Crystal International Technical Service and Support general manager Danny Cheng said: “We are thrilled to be at the forefront of this project that not only showcases our excellence to innovation but also addresses the needs of flexible electrothermal fabric in the industry. By leveraging advanced technology in textiles, we aim to improve the quality of life for the groups who are in need while promoting sustainable fashion practices.”

Beyond apparel, the versatile r-GO composite fabric holds potential for other applications such as heated shoe insoles and therapeutic heat bandages, offering benefits to various community segments.

Crystal is currently investigating commercial opportunities for its r-GO-infused clothing line.
