Clothing brand Diesel has joined the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) as part of its commitment to source at least 50% of its cotton more responsibly by 2025.

The Better Cotton Standard System is a holistic approach to sustainable cotton production, which covers all three pillars of sustainability: social, environmental and economic, and addresses the many challenges of cotton production.

Diesel took to Twitter to announce the move, which it says is part of its For Responsible Living strategy that launched in January.

In the framework of our #ForResponsibleLiving strategy we announce the collaboration with @BCICotton for a more sustainable cotton production. Our commitment will integrate sustainability-focused initiatives for our continuing success in a changing world. https://t.co/idLPg6ygSi pic.twitter.com/ATbHLTbq6o

“Diesel is investing in making cotton production more sustainable, and we are committed to sourcing at least 50% of our cotton as ‘more responsible cotton’ by 2025, that includes cotton sourced as Better Cotton, recycled and organic cotton,” the brand said on its website.

Retailers and brands affiliated with the Better Cotton Initiative sourced more than 1.5m metric tonnes of Better Cotton by the end of 2019, a 40% jump on the previous year.

BCI revealed the data as part of its 2019 Annual Report and said Better Cotton uptake now accounts for 6% of global cotton production.
