Taiwan-based textile supplier Far Eastern New Century (FENC) is to debut a chemical recycling product for textiles at the upcoming Taipei Innovative Textile Application Show (TITAS).

The product allows for polyester to be dissolved and the mixed polymers and dyestuffs to be filtered out during the chemical process. Cellulose is then converted into energy dense fuel rods, which can be used to generate electricity.

FENC’s general manager Hu Zhenglong told press the recycling technology would help solve the issue of redirecting waste especially since China closed its doors on textile waste.

FENC has been working to build a comprehensive green supply chain in the polyester industry through a focus on recycling to build a closed loop economy; replacing fossil fuels to achieve feedstock diversification; and reducing the consumption of resources to minimise environmental impact.

Earlier this year it issued NT$3bn (US$101.2m) in “green” bonds to fund several projects.

In a press release, Zhenglong says the company is committed to increasing the use of recycled PET by 2030, part of a goal of saving energy, reducing carbon emissions and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
