Garmon Chemicals has unveiled a new solution for what it claims is “completely sustainable bleaching” at denim trade show Kingpins.

During the event, which takes place in Amsterdam today (10 April) and tomorrow, Garmon presented its new “ecologically-advanced” Avol Lime neutralising agent. When combined with the firm’s existing Avol Oxy White – a bleaching agent described as a safe alternative to potassium permanganate – Avol Lime creates a new sustainable bleaching process.

Providing an alternative to hydroxylamine and sodium metabisulfite (typically the most used product in the process of potassium permanganate neutralisation), Avol Lime is “very safe” for workers’ health, Garmon says, and is classified at level 1 in the ZDHC gateway.

In addition, the firm claims its new solution carries a series of advantages compared to a standard neutralisation process:

  • More effectively removes permanganate and its residues from garments, up to 40%;
  • Provides garments with better contrasts and brighter discolourations;
  • Is active at room temperature.

Garmon’s new combined Avol Lime and Avol Oxy White combination, deemed the white&green package, is compliant with the requirements of its ‘greenofchange’ platform.

“Every technology and product that displays the ‘greenofchange’ logo is a beacon of true inspiration, capable of providing an answer to international and cross-industrial calls for sustainability,” the firm explains.  To respect these guidelines, garments must be treated with certified Garmon chemicals, through a finishing process based on the efficient use of resources.

One of the latest novelties of the platform presented at the Kingpins show is a hangtag including a QR code that can be featured on all garments whose finishing process complies with ‘greenofchange’ requirements. After scanning the code, users are provided with precise information on the amount of natural resources that were saved in the finishing of that single garment, along with all information related to the safety of the chemical compound with respect to the environment, workers and end-consumers.
