- The Dominican Association of Textile Industries (ADITEX) has called on customs to investigate the large volume of goods sold in the country with ‘Made in America’ labels. ADITEX says it suspects the items imported from the US may have origin in non-NAFTA countries, because these goods have very competitive prices, even though the cost of production is higher in the US. - Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case with local police accusing 17 people of breaching regulations over the construction of the Rana Plaza building that collapsed last year, killing more than 1,130 workers. The accused include the parents of Mohammad Sohel Rana – the owner of Rana Plaza – as well as a local mayor, engineers and three owners of garment factories that used the building. REUTERS
- Middle East textile firm Velocity Apparel is to establish an integrated garment factory in Mekelle town, Ethiopia, at a cost of US$80m. Construction will be undertaken in three phases, with the first expected to start in a few months and will take around a year to complete. Nigeria’s Kano State government has imported facilities worth NGN2bn (US$12.3m) for installation in 44 garment industries across the region. Buildings and other primary facilities have been provided to fast-track their growth. The government added it would partner with United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in the entrepreneurial sector to complement its efforts, aimed at making workers more productive. The All Pakistan Textile Mills Association has urged the government to ensure uninterrupted energy supply to all of its member mills throughout Punjab. The association says none of its member mills were involved in malpractices of any kind, and condemned the filing of penalties against nine of its mills for allegedly obtaining undue concession from Lahore Electirc Supply Company (Lesco).
