  • All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) senior vice chairman Zahid Mazhar has reiterated that high input costs are resulting in the closure of a large number of textile mills that manufacture yarn and fabrics. Mazhar has called on Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi to instruct the authorities to implement a textile package of Rs180 billion, announced earlier this year, for increasing exports. Mazhar says the delay in the implementation of the package is “rapidly eroding” the exports of textile sector. “The textile industry has been hit hard due to the high cost of energy and high tariffs of both gas and electricity are making Pakistan’s exports uncompetitive in the global market,” he added. “The cost of production of both gas and electricity is up to 30% higher than our regional competitors including Bangladesh, India, and Vietnam.” THE EXPRESS TRIBUNE

  • Botswana’s government has launched a National Response Strategy aimed at helping local businesses grow by taking advantage of The African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). The hub’s experts will work directly with the private sector to improve productivity and facilitate robust regional trade and global market access. The strategy will focus on the beef, textile, arts and craft, as well as jewellery sectors. It will launch from September. MMEGI ONLINE

  • Telanagana Industries Minister KT Rama Rao is calling on South Korean textile companies to invest in the upcoming Textiles Park in Warangal. At a meeting with the Korean Federation of Textile Industries Rao explained the park will host both national and international textile companies. To provide skilled manpower to the textile companies operating in the park, the government will create a training centre. Rao also hinted at the possibility of allocating a certain portion of land in the park to Korean companies. TELANGANA TODAY

  • The Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina has announced that all readymade garment manufacturing (RMG) and exporting industries are to be brought under the Labour Ministry’s central fund from which a worker or their children will get Tk3 lakh from it in case of grave injuries or death at their workplace. Should injury or death occur outside of the workplace, the compensation will be Tk2 lakh from the fund, which was solely created to provide financial support to the families of the workers. The Labour Ministry’s central fund was created with 0.03% of the export volume of the industries under BGMEA and BKMEA for the welfare of the workers. DHAKA TRIBUNE

  • Afghan president Ashraf Ghani has opened a US$7m cotton-processing plant in an industrial park in Herat province. It is among 30 new factories to come up in the park and is presently procuring 20 tonnes of cotton from local growers daily with an output of six tonnes. PAJHWOK AFGHAN NEWS

  • Cotton contamination has led to textile mills in the south of India cutting procurement by 40% from the state between October 2016 to September 2017. The contamination is said to have come from ginners in the state mixing comber waste with the cotton to meet demand from a higher number of textile mills in Gujarat, according to officials at the ICF mill. “Some mills have totally stopped buying Gujarat cotton,” explains P Nataraj, vice president at the ICF, MD and KPR Mill.
