  • Bangladeshi garment makers are opening liaison offices in Hong Kong in a bid to take advantage of its geographical proximity to China. Bangladesh is largely dependent on Chinese fabrics for making garment for export, and at least 20 Bangladeshi garment manufacturers have opened offices in Hong Kong. THE DAILY STAR
  • The Punjab government is set to offer incentive packages to encourage investors to set up textile parks in the state. Under the incentive scheme, the government would exempt 50% of the market fee, rural development fund and infrastructure for ten years to firms who purchase local cotton. In addition, 10% of the land bought by the developer could be used for commercial use without payment of any changes. THE ECONOMIC TIMES
  • German-based footwear company Rieker has received an investment license to build a US$14m factory in the Son Tinh district of Vietnam. The 10-hectare plant will be developed into two phases, with the first due for completion in the first quarter of 2012 and the second finishing in 2014. The facility aims to provide 5,000 direct jobs and 2,500 indirect jobs for local people and manufacture 7-8m pairs of shoes each year, earning revenues of $15m. VIETNAM NEWS BRIEF SERVICE
       
  • Many textile manufacturers in Chaiyaphum province, Thailand may be forced to close down or move their production to neighbouring countries if the daily minimum wage is raised to THB300 (US$10) from the beginning of next year. Labour costs are cheaper in nearby countries such as Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia or Indonesia. BANGKOK POST 
  • Japan’s Tokyo Style has received an investment license from Vietnam’s central province of Thua-Thien Hue to build a garment factory at Phu Bai Industrial Park. The US$21m mill is the company’s first project in Vietnam. Due to start operations in March next year, all of the factory’s products will be exported. VIETNAM NEWS BRIEF SERVICE
