  • Five Chinese firms have invested US$1.6bn to construct five hydro-electric dams with the capacity of 915 megawatts in Cambodia to develop the country’s economy. XINHUA
  • Vietnamese garment firms have raised employees’ salaries and improved working conditions following an increase in orders and higher export prices, but labour shortages remain within the industry. Garment firms want to prevent their workers from resigning. According to the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association, garment workers’ salaries increased 10 to 15% in 2010. THANH NIEN NEWS
  • American investors are showing increased interest in the Ethiopian textile industry, according to the US Ambassador to Ethiopia, Donald E Booth. Following a visit to businesses including Mesfin Industrial Engineering and Magarmet, he said this will create an opportunity to strengthen economic ties between the two countries.   • India’s National Textiles Corporation (NTC) said it will invest INR425 crore (US$96m) in association with a joint partner to manufacture technical textiles. The joint firm will set up two units in northern and southern India and produce for domestic and international markets. ASIA PULSE
  • The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry is planning to improve the skills of the country’s workers ahead of the establishment of the Asean economic community in 2015. A survey conducted by the Asian Productivity Organisation in 2004 showed that Indonesian workers stand below in productivity and skills compared to workers in Singapore, Malaysia or the Philippines. The chamber, also known as Kadin, will help by providing a training centre that will produce skilled workers who meet international standards. JAKARTA GLOBE
