  • The All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) has rejected to recommendations from the Senate Standing Committee on National Food Security and Research to impose regulatory duty on imports of cotton from India through the Wagah border. It pointed out that the ginners have less than 100,000 bales of cotton, which they will trade off before the arrival of the new crop, and that the stocks currently available are of a very low quality.   • Cotton production is being planned in Quipela (Gangula) in Angola’s coastal Cuanza Sul province, according to the country’s minister of Agriculture, Afonso Pedro Canga. According to Canga, the project is “going smoothly” and sowing should get underway next year. ALL AFRICA.

  • Almost 800 ready-made garment factories (RMG) have been closed down in Bangladesh according to commerce minister Tofail Ahmed. Speaking to parliament on Monday (20 June), he said there are 5,190 RMG factories in the country, of which 4,834 are export oriented. He added 790 factories have been closed down for “various reasons”. DHAKA TRIBUNE

  • Bangladesh said it plans to enhance trade and economic cooperation with Russia in energy, construction, infrastrtucture and technology, including machinery and textiles. The comments were made by Abdul Matlub Ahmed, president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FBCCI), on the sidelines of the St Petersburg International Economic Forum. SAUDI GAZETTE

  • Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh, a non-governmental organisation, has filed another court petition against tannery owners who have not yet moved out of Hazaribagh in Dhaka District. The move follows plans announced last year to relocate tanneries to a modern facility, Tannery Estate Dhaka, in Savar — a sprawling industrial suburb about 20km away. Bangladesh’s High Court has ordered a daily fine of BDT50,000 (US$635) for 154 tanneries, out of about 220, that have not relocated to the new zone. DHAKA TRIBUNE
