  • The Ho Chi Minh City Association of Garment Textile Embroidery and Knitting (Agtex) and product testing and certification specialist TUV SUD Vietnam company have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) designed to help Vietnamese garment makers improve their export prospects. The agreement will see the two sides co-organise quality and safety workshops and awareness programmes related to the textile and garment industry. VIETNAM BREAKING NEWS

  • Talks are due to start next month on an annual increase in the monthly minimum wage for workers in Cambodia’s garment and footwear sector. According to a statement from the Labour Ministry, the outcome will be released in early October, with the wage taking effect from 1 January 2017. The garment and footwear industry is Cambodia’s largest foreign currency earner, with 1,007 factories and about 754,000 workers. Currently, the minimum wage for the sector is US$140 per month. XINHUANET.COM

  • A team of South Korean scientists at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology has developed an electronic textile device that can stick to clothing via microscopic, hair-like structures called cilia. The invention paves the way for wearable displays and sensors that monitor health and pollution, the science ministry said. THE KOREA HERALD

  • The All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) has welcomed the government’s latest budget, which includes a reduction in export refinance to 3% and the reinstatement of a zero-rating – or no-tax and no-refund – regime for the textile sector. The industry had demanded the moves in pre-budget negotiations, arguing that the the viability of textile industry is key to the country’s economic growth. BUSINESS RECORDER

  • A garment and shoe manufacturing facility is due to be established in Ghana’s Cape Coast by the end of the year, according to Central Regional Minister Kweku Rickett Hagan. The factory, which is expected to train about 1,500 people, will also have a training centre. According to the Regional Minister, all equipment for the factory is ready and waiting to be shipped into the country for construction to begin. He hopes the factory will take advantage of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) to export products to the US market. GHANA WEB
