The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) has been ranked best in the ‘Traceability of Clothing with Textile Seals’ test by German consumer product testing organisation Stiftung Warentest.
GOTS certification covers the processing of certified organic fibres along the entire supply chain from field to finished product, and says it was the only one of the tested certifications to offer complete transparency and traceability while complying with strict social and ecological criteria at all stages of production – from field to finished textile.

Stiftung Warentest examined five seals for sustainable clothing. For the test, it selected three certified garments per audited seal and examined all scope and transaction certificates. The scope certificates confirm GOTS-certified companies’ ability to manufacture according to the GOTS criteria, while transaction certificates serve as shipping documents which prove that the garments are certified.
Independent auditors confirmed full traceability of GOTS certified textiles from cotton cultivation via spinning, knitting, finishing up to the finished textile and compliance with the stringent ecological and social criteria.

Earlier this year, GOTS reported that the number of facilities certified to its standard has increased by 14.6% year-on-year in 2018 – with the largest growth seen in Bangladesh.

In order to guarantee consistent product assurance of GOTS certified textiles, an independent on-site inspection, according to the GOTS standard, is carried out annually by GOTS approved certifiers.
