Indian apparel manufacturer Gokaldas Exports, which produces for the likes of Gap, Adidas and Zara, is understood to have closed one of its facilities in Karnataka, laying off around 1,300 staff.
The Euro Clothing Company II unit, located in Mysore, is said to have closed on Saturday (6 June) without the mandatory one-month notice to the state labour department, according to Telegraph India.
The Garment and Textile Workers’ Union told the publication Euro Clothing had removed some of its machinery from the factory on 30 May without any discussion with workers.
The union says a notice was left for employees at the close of work on Saturday informing them not to return to work Monday. Workers are said to have protested at the factory for around two hours.
According to Gokaldas Exports’ website, the company’s client list includes brands such as Abercrombie & Fitch, H&M, Reebok, Columbia Sportswear Company, Marks and Spencer and Puma. The firm is said to employ around 25,000 people, mostly women, across more than 20 garment-making units in Karnataka.
The company did not return a request for comment at the time of going to press.
