Turkish denim manufacturer Isko has become a member of Textile Exchange, joining the not-for-profit’s mission to develop more sustainable ways of textile production.

Isko says becoming a member of the Textile Exchange is “evidence” of how it maintains an open dialogue with industry stakeholders, shaping and developing more sustainable business models and more efficient practices.

The Textile Exchange aims to address gaps in current industry standards at all levels of the supply chain, from farmers to manufacturers to retailers.

“We are thrilled for this latest accomplishment, which shows how Isko paves the way for a sustainable business model that relies on tangible proof and actual results,” says Ebru Ozkucuk Guler, Isko senior CSR executive. “Textile Exchange will be a great support as Isko pledges responsibility, transparency and accountability”.

Based in Turkey, Isko has a production capacity of 250m metres of fabric per year with 1,500 high-tech automated looms. The company has a global presence with offices in 35 countries and is part of Sanko Tekstil, the textiles division of the Sanko Group, which is already part of the Textile Exchange.

It claims to be the only denim mill in the world to have been awarded both the Nordic Swan Ecolabel and the EU Ecolabel for its Isko Earth Fit denim fabric collection made with lower impact and alternative raw material options such as organic cotton, recycled cotton and recycled polyester from PET bottles.

Other sustainable innovations from Isko include the installation of automation systems in its weaving halls that save over 1.7m kWh of energy per year and reduce carbon emissions by over 114 tons. The heat and steam from the production cycle are captured and re-used, minimising energy consumption.

Last year, it became the first Turkish manufacturer to become a signatory member of the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) group, a move in line with its company commitment not to use harmful substances as a core part of its responsible innovation vision.
