Chiyoda Co, Japan’s biggest shoe retailer, is to sell its toy stores and concentrate instead on its footwear and casual wear shops according to media reports.

Asia Pulse says the company has agreed to sell 17 of its Hello Mac stores in Hokkaido and the northern Honshu region to a Sapporo-based toy wholesaler. Talks are also underway to sell a further 17 stores.

The sale means the Tokyo-based company will halve its toy store network from 106 to around 50 outlets by the end of February 2008.

Chiyoda Co imports and sells men’s and women’s shoes, toys, children’s clothing, baby items, sports shoes, sportswear, bags and accessories under brand names including Hydro-Tech, Palmer, Coleman, McGregor, Penn, Adidas, Asics and Reebok.
