German start-up Retraced GmbH has launched a new blockchain-based transparency solution that is being trialled with a number of fashion brands to improve their supply chain transparency.

The company is using Oracle’s Hyperledger Fabric Blockchain Platform as the basis of its new transparency-as-a-service tool, which went live earlier this month following a demonstration with Cano Clothing Company, whose handcrafted leather shoes are made in Mexico. Retraced’s solution collects supply chain information from Cano and makes it available for the end-consumer – connecting shoppers with the makers of fashion and offering insights into the production process and raw materials.

In addition, the company can collect useful information to help make its supply chain more efficient. And a soon-to-be-released consumer app will enable shoppers to scan their shoes to learn about the type of leather, which processes were used to manufacture the leather, and the artisans that turned the leather into footwear.

“Working with a fair fashion brand like Cano allows us to further test and improve the solution’s real-world flexibility, while also helping Cano customers learn more about the ethical and sustainable production standards,” says retraced co-founder, Lukas Pünder.

The company plans to scale its solution, starting first with the German sustainable fashion market. Brands due to go live with retraced in September  include Düsseldorf-based contemporary, urban apparel and footwear brand AFew; John W Shoes, which makes handmade leather shoes in the EU; and Jyoti organic clothing and accessories produced in its own workshop in India.

As well as offering a new customer touchpoint for fashion brands and retailers, Retraced enables them to get in-depth, real-time supply chain information that can be used to identify bottlenecks and quality issues, or as a trigger to improve processes.
